Are trainers back in fashion?

In December 2013 on Avenue 57 Michelle from My Fashionable 40s posted a pic of herself in her new trainers. Yes nice, yes reminded me of trainers from my teens, yes I glanced over them on their first outing. And then she posted again, and again and again and if you see something many times ... you fall in love.

And to confirm I'm in the right stylish camp ... the wonderful gorgeous and genuinely nice Avril from School Gate Style tells me she has new trainers and they too are amazing ... cue me running to Google to find out which trainers should I buy? I was going to copy Michelle (still might!), I want to copy Avril (still might) but is there something out there that is 'me'?

Can I take a moment to run by the Fiona School of soft footwear glossary:

Pump - the kind of thing you wore at school ... rubber sole, fabric upper - a 'dap' we used to call it and these modern days have us wearing Converse.

Sneakers - only if you are American are you allowed to call them these. End of.

Trainers - A classic sports shoe for doing sport in but, of late, has become somewhat fashionable again among the 35+ crew (get me using the word crew as if I'm 15!)

The trick about the new modern (never going to do any sport in them) trainer is that they need to look like a trainer but not a sports trainer and yet they are a sports trainer .. confused? Me too!

Michelle has these (yes they are for the male foot!). These look like a trainer and I reckon they are but they also look FAB with jeans and jacket!

Avril has these in  blue - she is going to make these look amazing as only one fashionista can!

Can I just also let you know that it was in 1993 at the V Festival in Chelmsford that I danced the night away in my ORIGINAL Adidas trainers. The sad tale is they were so rank by the end of the 90's I had to throw them away.

GET ME SOME TRAINERS NOW PLEASE!

Right, let's crack on - Operation Find Fiona A Pair of Trainers That Are Cool But Won't Break The Bank (and all high tops/wedge are out - for me they are a complete no no no no no no (unless I change my mind that is!))

I can't help but still love the Gazelle - there is something so retro, so cool about this one and in grey it's perfect for this middle age woman!

I just love a navy anything so of course these were going to make an appearance

NikeZoom Vomero+ 8 - £105 - REALLY?????? But I love you so

Nike Grey Flex Trainers - £69 (Debenhams curently have 20% off so you can nab these for £55.20) I THINK I NEED THESE

Adidas Gazelle Gold Trainers - £32 (in the sale with 50% off) - These are a great close second ahead of the one above.

And they still do the ones like my originals but not quite my originals ... should I relive the moment and buy them or let it pass now?

Adidas Honey - £20 (half price, they were £40)

I really didn't think I needed a pair of trainers for fashion in my life but now I need all that I have found .. I wonder what James might say if I bought 5 pairs of trainers but never set foot inside the gym (which I never do by the way!).  Although I am going to a pilates class on Monday for my back which seems to have conked out since I turned 40!

Tell me, do you won a pair of fashion trainers that are really trainers trainers and not Converse stylee trainers?

Fiona
xoxo

  4. Love the gazelles - I had green back in the 90s when Kate Moss was making them cool - now I have blue - love, love, love them - my converse leather sneakers are my favorite right now though - really comfy and a bit different from Chucks. xx

    1. I have fabric converse but they are actually very uncomfortable even though I love the style

  5. Nope! Sorry! Can't get on board with this trend. To me they just look too clumpy and like you were too lazy to make an effort. Converse I get ... and I have a long standing love for Ash Genials - but maybe that's because they are both so neat on the foot and don't look like they belong pounding a treadmill!! But then anything that even hints at the possibility of exercise is a NO from me :)

  6. Haha Helen is positively revolting against the trainer trend. I'm not far behind but it's not a no just yet. I always feel slightly under dressed in them and seem to reach for a heel instead. 2 points though:
-There are some great styles out there at the moment (love your choices)
    -Michelle seriously rocks that look
Nb. I did try the look about 10 years ago under the influence of Trinny and Susannah (god forbid). Do you remember the non-sporty trainers and wide legged trousers? I.Am.Ashamed!

    1. I may feel very under dressed in them too - I guess I won't know until I buy them, try them and no doubt return them! I love them on others but I'm not sure they will suit me.
I do not remember the trend of non sporty trainers and wide legged trousers no!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Adidas devotee here for running, golf & leisure. I have loads of pairs, ahem, 15. Not a wedge in sight. I wore fashion tankers I guess you'd call them all through college & uni, mainly purchased in places like Schuh in powder pink or multi stripes. Gotta love those German stripes :)

  8. Last summer was all about the Nike Free Run for the younger fashion bloggers and I so wanted a pair! Then as autumn approached and my 13 year old son needed new trainers, I had noticed that my daughter boyfriends were all wearing New Balance so we bought him a pair. Since then they really are the next big thing and yes you guessed it, I want a pair! x

    1. New Balance look nice because of the colour - I love the wine colour (I love wine!)
Oh decisions decisions - I'm not one to follow the crowd - I just like what I like!

  9. I love trainers - I'm a huge Puma fan and have several pairs but have always been too scared to post pics for all you Fashionistas on A57 to see. I'm not a style leader like Michelle! I'm also a big fan of the Superga but arguably they are more pump than trainer.

On another note entirely, the wrap bracelets arrived yesterday and I LOVE them. Thanks so much Fiona. I'll try and get some decent pics (with a decent outfit!) for you. x

I am so pleased you liked the wrap bracelets, they've flown off the shelves!!

  10. I love those NB's but really want a pair of Nike free run. I'll prob be living in trainers when baby comes so feel I'm justified at least. I'd wear trainers every day if I could get away with it!

  11. I am a trainer devotee...I love them, they have transformed the schoolrun, I bought my New Balance a couple of years ago after seeing a girl wearing a pair in Paris! They are so comfy! Now I am waiting for Adidas to re-launch Stan Smiths to buy a pair for the summer. I say go for it they are the UGGs of 2013/14! xx

  12. Hate them on me, but the gold gazelles are amazing, I've only just got some of the wedgey trainers and then from Clarks rather than Ash, so if I do ever get this trend I will be mega late!!!
