Are you trendy?

I can honestly say, hand on heart, I am not trendy. I don't really follow trends, I just buy what I like. I wear clothes that are 15+ years old and I don't buy that often. I wish I could say I just bought lots of timeless classics that were expensive and built to last but I don't! I shop anywhere and ALWAYS as cheaply as possible. This year has been tragic for me (financially) and my wardrobe has not been filled with many new things.

I don't even think I have a 'style' - as you can see, I wear what I want, it's not 'trendy' or 'fashionable' - it's just what I like to wear! I make an effort for sure but I don't think it's overly funky/trendy/inspirational.

Do you consider yourself 'on trend'? Do you have a 'style' you stick to? Do you make an effort more times than not?

Fiona

  1. Err, slightly, I have a uniform, and I pretty much stick to it, and No. You always look put together and happy (even when hungover I might add!) I am lazy and I am quite happy in jeans, a jumper and a coat right now. XX

  2. I think I am more trendy than ever before - by that I mean that I am more aware of trends and fashion than ever before. There was a time I hated shopping and I just wore what was comfortable and what fit me! Now I love to experiment with trends and even weird trends at that lol!

    1. You see, I wouldn't know one designer to the next. I've never had the budget and just wouldn't have a clue! It's only through blogging and following people like you that I get to know!

  3. I think I know what is on trend but I don't always go with what's in fashion purely because it doesn't suit me. I see people who are wearing the latest and they look fab but then again, I see some which look very bad. I think it's down to the individual and whether you have that look about you. You can put the same fashionable clothes on different people and the overall look will be quite different. What I am impressed with Fiona is that you buy what you love and wear what you love and that shows in the variety of clothing that you have and don't care too much about whether it is in or not - what you are concerned with is whether it makes you feel good. I find myself steering away from styles which I would have loved in the past but I can't tell if that is as a result of my change in life (SAHM) as opposed to a working professional when heels and skirts were de rigeur. I have to say that I have been greatly influenced by blogs over the last couple of years and I can see how my style has changed but I think there still lurks me and a pair of jeans at the end of it all which has always been my style. I just adapt it a little from year to year and that's good enough for me.

    1. Great reply Sue! I do think that our 'circumstance' does change how we dress. I'd look stupid in shift dresses/pencil skirts and pussy bow blouses even though I would LOVE to wear them :-)!
You always look great anyway Sue and you're always one for trying the trends.

  4. It's taken me many years to feel comfortable in what I wear and it's not necessarily bang on trend but I feel happy with my wardrobe. I don't feel the need to have the latest must-haves but I do admire from afar those who partake. I still make the odd mistake eg. The skater shoe. I bought a pair against my better judgement, wore them once and decided no! I'm more interested in building a wardrobe that is versatile giving me lots of different options. For example this morning I could have worn 9 different jackets with a dress that I'm wearing. That pleased me very much (saddo). I think if I could describe you in one word Fiona, it would be 'colourful'. You're not afraid of colour and wear it really well, something lots of people can't pull off x

    1. I've never ever thought of me as being colourful or good with colours. I do love it when others see things you don't!
I do think as we get older get better at knowing what to do/how to mix it up and where confidently things that we know suit.

  5. I love jumping on a trend always have since I was about 7. I have to be more careful now though and not get carried away as I would look stupid! You always look stylish, and I think trendy. You wear colours beautifully and mix and match so well with a sophisticated edge xxx

    1. You have such style Francis, I see you play with the trends and it works for you. For me it doesn't work because I live in the country and work in a totally style/less office!

  6. I am much more confident in my *on trend* choices now that I am in my forties and to be honest I think that Avenue 57 had a huge impact on my confidence, so I have you to thank for that. With this style stuff it's all a learning curve isn't it? What I have found it that's it's better to splurge on basics, on the classic items in your wardrobe but to hunt out the bargains as far as the high fashion items are concerned as they are normally only one season wonders! Am I trendy....I hope so?! xx

    1. You're REALLY trendy and funky and cool Michelle! I LOVE how you take trends and mix with the classic items - totally perfect for ladies of 'our age'!!!!

Thank you for lovely kind words about A57

  7. Oh God no! I'm definitely not trendy as much as I like to admire those that are. I think my style is more classic and always has been - I know what suits me and I usually look a bit daft in the latest trends. Having said that, I hope I'm not completely unfashionable either!!! Like Donna, I always think you look very bright and colourful and lovely!

    1. Deffo you are a timeless classic Helen but not in a fuddy duddy way .. you know what suits and every time I've seen you I think you are elegantly put together.

I've never really thought about me being a colourful person!

  8. I do buy on trend items but certainly don't want to be trendy. I do prefer a classic wardrobe but get sidelined by colour and print x

  9. Hi Fiona - I've been following your blog for a couple of months now and wanted to respond to this post by saying that you are one of those rare women who look great in whatever they put on, irrespective of the current trends and regardless of the price tags on the clothes they buy. You have a fantastic smile and very warm personality that just shines through. Sometimes it's not the clothes that make the man but the other way around ;)
I have quite a different taste/style to yours but cannot help but admire your bravery and confidence especially when it comes to the choice of colours that you wear. You may not be the trendiest lady (neither am I, I know exactly what suits me and flatters my figure and makes me feel comfortable and confident, myself really, and tend to stick with the same colours, textures, cuts, only occasionally embracing certain trends that would work with the rest of my wardrobe preferably without being a one season wonder), but you certainly are one of the boldest (in the best possible way), most creative and actually rather polished blogging ladies out there. Best wishes, Irina xx

  10. You always look fabulous, fiona, and I lve how you wear colour. I certainly am not trendy, but I think I know what suits me and stick to that formula really! For me, clothes definitely make me feel more confident and I hate it if I get it wrong - I feel uncomfortable all day! I think you've given confidence to so many women through Avenue 57 - an inspiration! Great post, Fiona! Lynne xx

  11. I like to think I know all the trends, but don't always follow them. I think my style has changed recently and I seem to favour simple classic pieces more, so obviously not 'trendy' stuff which comes and goes.

  12. I actually think of you as quite trendy! But then I am someone who's mainly following trends from 1955...
