There has been LOTS of talk about flares online via Avenue 57 discussion group and I 've seen every other blogger blog about them so being the sheep I am I've hunted down the now totally sold out online flares from M&S (via my mum who shops more than I drink wine). I was so excited to try them on and they felt amazingly soft and fitted like a glove .. and then I looked in the mirror
How is it that at 5ft 9 and a dress size 10, I look dumpy and wide?? I don't get it!
And there is the end of this post, I have a sad face.

I am struggling to see me wearing these again - I never liked them much when they were in the last time and now, while I do think they look ok on some other bloggers, they're not as flattering as skinnies. I think the issue with yours is that they're not tight enough around the knee and they probably need to be an inch or two longer? That's the problem with boot cuts - they're notoriously hard to buy - much more so than skinnies. I wish they would just go away.... :( :(
ReplyDeleteI've stepped away already - they are not 'for me' and I shall not be wearing again - EVER!!!!!
DeleteSkinny jeans all the way
I think that a good boyfriend jean is more flattering I love the Phoebe by Mih they have lots of preloved ones on Vestaire Collective. You look great and can carry the look off but I think it is the thought of having to wear heels which are a must with flares that puts me off

I agree with you about the boyf jeans - I really wanted these to work - LIKE REALLY REALLY REALLY but sadly not!
DeleteI love mine but then I always have enjoyed wearing them in and out of fashion! I love them super skinny around the thighs!
ReplyDeleteThey felt super skinny to me!!
DeleteYep I love mine too but the new ones I've tried on don't fit so well. Are yo sure you don't have any from last time in your wardrobe? x
ReplyDeleteI did have some but they were proper flares and really rather nasty!
DeleteIt beggars belief. In theory they should suit you brilliantly. I have only got the one pair and they are very old and from Next. They suit me better than a boyfriend because I have shape (i.e a big arse.) These are worn with a 2 inch block style heel. I wouldn't wear them with a flat. :0) Thank you for the mention. H xxx
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't wear with a flat either - think I'm going to try a skinny bootcut!
DeleteThat's just mad, because yes! In theory they should work really well. I think it's because they're not tight enough around your thigh. Dear God ... I shudder to think what I'd look like, if they actually managed to make you look wide !!
ReplyDeleteSome petite women look amazing though - Why do I look like this?????
DeleteI think the flare is tricky to style! Getting the top half to balance properly with the bottom half is what is difficult for me! I would love to be able to pinpoint this but I'm not sure what is not making them work for you! Thing is, the look of mine you have featured here (thank you for the lovely mention btw!) was the best I have felt in them so far! What is it about that outfit....could it just be how I felt that day?? I think the flares are a wardrobe anomaly for me! xx
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it's the rounded shoes? Perhaps a pointy shoe/boot?
DeleteAgree with all above you have to get them super tight on the thigh, super long and wear with heels...rendering them pretty useless in most normal situation especially when it is raining or if you have to walk anywhere. If you were to get into them though you would look flipping amazing as you are so tall and slim! X
ReplyDeleteI only buy things I can wear all year round/a lot - they're going back!
DeleteI know what you mean, you do look great in your skinnies though! I was hoping to get a pair post pregnancy but a bit worried they may not flatter me either and I do love my skinny jeans. Maybe they need to be a bit more fitted on the top part?? X
ReplyDeleteSkinny jeans are back on!
DeleteOh my goodness, you definitely don't look dumpy!! But when you don't feel right in something, you don't feel right! I love flares & as long as they are tight on my thighs & touching the floor, they slim down my substantial curves, lol.
ReplyDeleteI prefer them with wedges but also love them worn with vest tops & sandals in summer, a la Rachel Zoe :) x
Maybe it's because I'm a plank in shape? But then Michelle and Helen look good and they're slim. They do suit so many others but just not me ... sobs
DeleteOkay, I have to put in my two cents and read everyone's comments after, but you DO NOT look dumpy and wide. Now I prefer you in skinnies, but these look really nice on you. Hand on heart!
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet and kind - dumpy might have been a bit of a strong word but I do look shorter than usual!
DeleteI have those and I had to take them home with me as in the changing room they were super flattering despite being super long. I've not tried them on since so I could have been having a delusional moment. I do think that for me personally, I will be going back to my tried and tested styles and just have the odd fling with the whole flare business. They need much more work. And walking in heels I constitute as work.
ReplyDeleteI bet you make them look amazing with trainers - I BET!
DeleteSo, throwing my opinion into the mix, and being totally honest I'd say they look to big and too short and because of this they look a bit mumsy boot cut rather than an uber cool flare! I agree with the others that if you had a pair which are a bit tighter on the thigh, were an inch or so longer and changed the shoe you might be onto a winner?
ReplyDeleteMe? I'm going to stay faithful to skinnies and boyfriend jeans xx
I felt totally mumsy in them! They were floor sweeping long - I'm not sure it shows here?
DeleteEither way, I'm sticking to what I know and flares aint it!
