Shall I cut it off?

I have hated my hair for the past 7+ years. I had it cut into a bob way back when and ever since I've hated it. I've over coloured it, I've cut it short to get rid of the dye. I've over coloured it again (because I'm stupid like  that) and I've had frizz and nonsense to battle since. I once had long gorgeous locks (never thick hair because I don't have thick hair, but there has always been lots of it). Not now. Since turning 40 I have realised that I'll never have the hair I want. It won't grow nicely and instead is just a mass of frizz and so for 90% of the time I clip the fringe up and scrape it back to a messy up do at the back with no style.

This is how it seems to look every day and I am sick of it. What's the point of spending time drying it (every other day) if all I do is end up looking like this

It went nice for half a day only around 4 months ago. If I could make it do this every day I'd be keeping it a bit longer but the truth is that within 2 hrs this was frizzy and all tied up because it was bugging me

So ... should I do an "Avril" and cut it off into a neat bob? I have started to use organic hair dye (it's not that great in covering up the grey, but it's kinder for my hair) and only washing and styling every other day. I also use a heat protector when I blow dry and use a hot air stylish brush instead of a hair dryer.

Here is what I'm thinking

My absolute favourite in terms of style and colour has to be this (but then I'm only just a little bit in love with the Minogue they call Dannii).

Shall I or shan't I? I regretted it when I had it done all those years ago but I was young then! I have tried to make a longer style work for me but it just isn't happening.

  1. I'd go with the Keira...you can always cut some layers off and end up with n. 2 or 3. I think the last two might be a bit sleek and high maintenance. You could ask a good hairdresser an opinion because so much depends on your hair texture. You should aim for a style where you don't have to fight it. Also the less you wash it the better it is for the hair and finding the right shampoo (nourishing probably for the frizz? I like Klorane products, but I use the chamomile one since I'm blond, not a good one for brunettes!) Go for it!

    1. I have found that shampoo's that claim to combat frizz just coat it and leave it lifeless and dull (more than it is naturally)! I have a natural curl (frizz) that I have to fight every day.

I just want to get up and go and short of a buzz cut I don't think I'll ever achieve it!

I think you might be right about going down the Keira route first - good point.

  2. Your hair sounds like mine! The single thing that saves me from the ever present pony tail is the Babyliss Big Hair- have you tried it? It's like a proper salon blow dry you do yourself. I have a longish bob with layers and when I can be bothered I love the look from the Banyliss and it lasts till the next wash. Truly has changed the way I feel about my frizzy mop!

    1. I have a Tresemme equivalent which has helped so much but I reckon I do need to upgrade to the best tool to do the job.
My friend has a brazillian blow dry but it's really expensive to keep up on top of cuts and colours

  3. I've recently just cut off around 16" off my hair because early menopause (great!) is causing a lot of hair loss & it was looking awful. I love style 2, in fact I have it pinned on a Pinterest board! Emma Willis has beautiful hair & I also love the cut & colour of Miss Minogue.

I say go for it. - you could absolutely love it but if not, it's hair, it'll grow back!! I think it'd really suit you a wee bit shorter :)

    1. Hi Sarah

I think you might be right and you are most certainly right in that it will grow again. I actually can't hate it anymore than I already do.

Well done on you have the 16" chopped off - that's a LOT!!!

  4. Deep breath, go for it, I think it would suit you shorter and sharper. I go to Jason Palmer and would definitely recommend.

    1. I was thinking of Perfectly Posh in Hungerford as a friend has the same cut done and it looks amazing on her.

I think I might just go ahead and get this done - sooner rather than later!

  5. Love ur blog but never comment. As a curly girl I say go for it and go with the curl. Go for the all one length with some layers and use paul mitchel styling mouse to scrunch a wave into it. I suspect your problem is fighting the frizz - why not go with it and use curl promoting products rather than heavy frizz fighting ones. Goos luck. Hx

    1. Thank you for commenting Hayley and lovely king words.
I think you might be on to something but my hair is actually VERY curly if I work with it. Think Shirley Temple (but not red)!

Equally the frizz is just foul.

    2. Really? That curly? Because Shirley Temple curly is very curly. But I think your problem is probably that you're fighting it like someone above mentioned - take it a bit shorter and try to loose wave it. I bet it will be fab.

    3. I agree with Sue!!! Go for it ..,. and scrunch it when you dry it... and then it will (miraculously) become a sort of 'just got out of bed/just back from the beach' wave ... and we'll all be madly jealous and hate you forever (in a good way!) XX

    1. OK, I'll get it done! If I hate it then I'll clip it back and put it up which is what I do today anyway!

  8. My hair has a HORRIBLE curl, it's not a tussle just got out of bed, it's a SHIRLEY TEMPLE CURL FRIZZ!

  9. Well you know what I'm going to say...but not because I did it and love it, because I genuinely think it will suit your face shape better. LOVE the pictures you've linked to though I would say stick as much as you can to your natural colour because as soon as you colour it something different, it will be damaged from that and you're on a hiding to nothing then. Just get a really great hairdresser to do it...really splash out on someone that another short hair person recommends. When I went long to short last time (5 years ago) I went to my usual girl and hated it and then couldn't face her ever again...at least if a new person does it and you hate it, you never need worry about going back! x

  11. I've recently gone from a bob to a pixie short cut and love as I felt the bob was making me look too mumsy as I takes a lot of staying to look anything like the above pics bur the best advice is a good hairdresser maybe you should think I about having a change in stylist who would come up with new ideas for you , x

    1. That is really good advice .. I just know I hate the shape of my face and a pixie crop would highlight it and then I'd feel all exposed!

  12. Well you've seen my hair, Fiona, so it can't be as frizzy and curly as mine is! I went shorter about four years ago and I have never regretted it. I will never have the hair I would like but I think you learn to accept what you have. I think your hair would look AMAZING shorter. Lynne xx

  14. I think the shorter you go, the longer it takes to style it particularly a sleek bob. I'd be more tempted to go for something like Michelle's when she had her hair chopped. A quick whizz with the dryer and a run, over with the barrel curling tongues x

    1. I don't want pixie crop short (although I reckon that's DEAD easy to style) but do want something that I do have to style because right now I have to and it looks crap!!!!!

  15. Do it!!!!! You will not regret it, its so much easier to handle . I had all mine cut off because like you all I did was tie it up. I get way more coments on my hair now than I ever did xx

  16. I have thin, fly-away hair that I hate & often dream of going for the chop. I've done it before but always come right back to where I am. It's a tough decision but it will always grow back if you are feeling brave!!! X
