Rianna collection at River Island, sort of

River Island is a shop I always used to buy clothes in, but then the children came along and I lost ALL style mojo .. but that slowly came back a few years ago when my identity as FIONA came back and I was no longer just a mummy.

Recently there has been a lot of hype about Rianna's collection for River Island so I was drawn back to the store online and had a look.  Firstly, the Rianna collection is just a bit too street and hip for this 39 year old living in the country but if I were living somewhere more hip than Newbury and if I were 20 years younger then I can see the appeal of some pieces. But this blog post is not about Rianna or her effortless hip style, it's about me and what I found in River Island when I looking there today.  WOW .. who knew that they do still have items that I would buy in a heartbeat.

Here is my wish list if I could (I've got the brakes on gently for spending at the moment):

YELLOW PANELLED CAP SLEEVE PENCIL DRESS - £35
There is a yellow dress included in the Rianna collection but it's LOUD and SHORT and twice the price of this.

I love the zip detail on the back

CREAM LACE BEAD EMBELLISHED SHELL TOP - £30
I may actually have to buy this because it's SO good - dress up for night, dress down for day - I love the versatility of it

NAVY AND WHITE BRETON STRIPE T-SHIRT - £10
So predictable - a striped tshirt .. I love them!

YELLOW MESH INSERT BOXY LONG SLEEVE JUMPER - £35
Do you spot a yellow lust theme yet? I love this jumper so much

WHITE RIPPED AMELIE SUPERSKINNY JEANS - £35
I love white jeans, I need more in my life and at £35 these are great value. River Island also do a long leg which is perfect for me

MID WASH DISTRESSED CASSIE BOYFRIEND JEANS - £45
I am totally into boyfriend jeans at the moment. Took me a while to feel right in them as they were so different to the skinny jeans I've been wearing for the past 3 years. Grab a pair and try them, you might be pleasantly surprised.

CREAM BOUCLE WATERFALL BIKER JACKET - £55
This was pointed out to me by Joanna from Poppy's Style a few weeks ago - it's drippingly (made up word) gorgeous don't you think? I'd wear with the jeans from above and some grey slouchy ankle boots.

BEIGE LEATHER WESTERN ANKLE BOOTS - £60
LOVE these, no more words required.

So, my dream purchase list would set me back £308 and I was being very good when browsing, I could VERY easily have spent many hundreds more. I'll be back to River Island when I'm looking to buy someething next time around.

What shop have you forgotten about or never shop in anymore due to age/style changes?

  1. My measure of cost vs value is so distorted now, to me £300 in RI is quite a big spend, and yet I would go to Bicester Village and spend that on two items if they had originally cost 80% more.
I think I do a a sort of ebay measure, ie what would I have to pay for this on Ebay if I wanted to find it. So for most of the high street it comes in at under a fiver and for really well made, great fabrics etc quite a lot more.
I just don't ever shop on the high street at all now as I know that within a few weeks, anything that was a big seller will be on the Bay for 99p! I am not sure if it is because I have kids who hate shopping, but I actually can't remember the last time that I just moseyed around passing the time of day looking at clothes in shops, it has literally been about 15 years. That's why I love these blogs and 'real people' posts as I can see what people are actually wearing (not what they shops and magazines tell us they are!)But after that long ramble, to answer the question, I'm out of touch with EVERY shop that I ever used to go in.

  2. I am with you on the physical shopping thing - mine started when my two boys were younger and they hated shopping. I then stopped going and now rely still on online shopping.

I can't rely on ebay as I just have found out - a top I ordered (£30) is WAY too small and the seller doesn't offer returns - back on the bay it goes but it's a hassle!

I also saw a Zara top I wanted that was 3 times the price on ebay than in the store!!

Love the ramble and then "I'm out of touch with EVERY shop..." - brilliant!!!

Other stores I feel out of touch with that I once loved - New Look and Miss Selfridge

  3. Hi there! Love these choices, especially the jacket and boots and white jeans! I love River Island too and find their denim really on trend and comfortable as I am a size 12 in it xx

    1. They do do lovely soft denim - last time I bought from there (decades ago) they came up quite small .. is the sizing better now?

  4. Thanks for the mention - the jacket is fabulous - I love it - perfect for transitional weather too - not to mention the blush color is gorgeous! I was really impressed with RI and haven't been in there for years - they had a gorgeous yellow jacket too that I wish I'd gotten - but there was literally NO room left in my bag. Someone just told me about vacuum bags - might have to get some for next time!:)

  5. I LOVE River Island! Can't remember the last time I went in there and didn't lust after something, to the point where I worry that far too large a proportion of my wardrobe comes from there. They're also the only place that I can find a decent high waisted jean that fits me - I have a 10 inch difference between my waist and hips so really, really struggle to find jeans/trousers that fit properly.

    1. And I'm the opposite and love low rise jeans and yet we can both shop there and find what we want

I think I'm going to go into my little store tomorrow and do a show and tell - but do I have the will power NOT to buy?

  6. I love the shots of yellow in your picks. My other favourite colour! The boucle waterfall jacket looks fab on Joanna doesn't it but I can totally see you in it as well. Especially teamed with those boots you featured.

Now we just need some sunshine to wear this lot!

  7. I'm willing the sun out in my choice of clothes! WISH it would warm up - even now I'm thinking about a meeting tomorrow and how to keep warm in minus figures!

  8. I must admit, I usually walk straight by the clothes in RI and head for the scarves and bags. They do GREAT scarves and bags. But now that I've seen your post, I may have to stop and look next time. Bloody hell Fiona, between your blog & your twitter feeds of gorgeous clothes, you truly are the Devil in (a really lovely, it must be said!) Disguise!! Enough with the temptation now!!! Helen
